Frightening Films for a Fearsome Halloween!

By Cali Lee

Halloween is almost here and 'tis the season for a fright fest of spooky films to tingle your spine. So grab some popcorn, turn off the lights and curl up in a warm blankie, because a good scary movie is guaranteed to chill you to the bone! I'm a long time fan of all things scary, especially movies, so if there are any mentioned here that you have never seen, or just haven't seen for a very long time pick it up this Halloween for a super creepy treat.

Since the golden age of film, thrill seeking movie goers have been able to enjoy a multitude of classic creature features. The monsters of myth and legend were brought to life and continue to haunt our TV screens years later. We have many actors to thank for darkening our dreams and giving us a treasure trove of classic horror films, but the three most famous by far are Bella Lugosi, Boris Karloff, and Lon Chaney, the man of a thousand faces. Some very well known classics starring these enigmatic actors include; Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman, the Mummy, Phantom of the Opera, Dracula vs. Frankenstein, the list goes on and on. However, there are many other fright flicks starring this threesome of terror that are not as mainstream and have been lost to the tides of time. For a twist on your Halloween festivities this year I recommend digging up some of these forgotten Horror classics, a couple I would suggest for a good scare... "White Zombie" (1932) starring Bella Lugosi, and Edgar Allen Poe's tale "Black Cat" (1934) starring both Bella Lugosi and Lon Chaney.

A scary film, along with some spooky tunes can crate the perfect backdrop for your Halloween party. A movie can be a great way to 'set the mood' as well as provide your guests with extra entertainment. Some chilling themes to try out... Vincent Price night (because how can you have Halloween without Vincent!) "House of Wax" (1953),"The Fly" (1958), "House on Haunted Hill" (1959), and "The Bat" (1959). Two more highly amusing, as well as comical classics... "Creature From the Black Lagoon" (1954) and "The Brain That Wouldn't Die" (1962).

Scary movies have a unique way of grabbing our imagination. Through these films we can safely bring monstrous creatures and madmen into our homes for Halloween; or can we? When all the lights are out and we lay down to sleep an eerie chill begins to rise, then suddenly we realize that fear has found it's way to creep up and tuck us in. Every noise is amplified, each shadow carefully studied as the eyes begin to adjust to the darkness, and do we even dare to dream? Make sure that the closet door is shut, and remember not to hang your hands over the edge of the bed, because guess what... the boogie man is real!

Here's a list of some of my personal favorite fright flicks for your enjoyment...

"The House That Dripped Blood" (1970, this one is not as bad as it sounds, plus it stars Christopher Lee, it scares me just to write his name!)
"Ghost Story" (1981)
"Poltergeist" (1982)
"Creepshow" (1982)
"Dolls" (1982)
"Twilight Zone the Movie" (1983)
"Night of the Living Dead" (1968 & 1990)
and if you want a REALLY good laugh you must watch...
"Return of the Living Dead II" (1988)

         Happy Haunting this Halloween!
